About this tour
Truman Plaza, the Berlin Brigade's main shopping complex and amongst the American military's first structures built in Berlin is now home to an award-winning "urban village." The French Économats shopping center in the former Cité Foch is now the "Fleur de Berlin" apartment complex. The Britannia Centre, the British center built on the grounds of the demolished Spandau Prison, is now a Kaufland.
While these and other places built and expanded by the Allied forces during Berlin's occupation fell into disuse and were either razed or redeveloped to address the needs of a reunited city, some still exist in various forms, be they military housing repurposed for civilian use or military bases turned over to the German military as it reestablished itself in the reunited capital city.
Important note: this tour does not have a pre-defined itinerary; I work with you to develop an itinerary based around your general interests, specific requests, or both, as more and more Cold War Berlin sites fade into the fog of history and are subsumed by urban development.
