After more than two decades leading tours throughout Europe, I've traveled with several guests whose mobility, vision, hearing, or other individual needs required additional planning. Even before my life in tourism, in my small circle of near and dear friends, one is blind and another is confined to a wheelchair. Both my guests' and friends' experiences have given me a much greater appreciation for the challenges many travelers face, and while no historic city can claim to be completely barrier-free, Berlin has made accessibility a priority since reunification, continually expanding step-free transportation through their Barrier-Free by 2030 project, improving public spaces, all while embracing the principle of Design for All.

Together, these provide a quick and transparent overview of not only the physical demands of a tour, but also the accessibility considerations you may encounter along the way.

Activity Level
How much physical activity is involved?
Gentle
Gentle tours have been designed to offer the most even terrain possible, avoiding too many elevation changes, stairs, tricky surfaces like 19th century cobblestones, etc. Suitable for all guests.
Easy
Easy tours include several short walks connected by transportation or sightseeing stops. Guests should be comfortable walking on paved or generally level surfaces for moderate periods of time including standing. Generally suitable for all guests.
Moderate
Moderate tours require a reasonable level of stamina. Expect walking distances to be a little longer with extended periods of standing, occasional inclines, cobblestones, and the occasional stairways. Suitable for most guests.
Active
Active tours will encounter varied terrain, longer stretches of walking and standing, and will include inclines and some challenging though usually surmountable conditions. May not be suitable for some guests.
Demanding
Topography, unadapted architecture, ongoing renovations, other obstacles - all are potential reasons for demanding tours necessitating a higher degree of fitness, endurance and balance. This ranking is never given lightly.
Barrier-Free Ratings
This rating will allow you to determine each itinerary's accessibility.
Accessible
Accessible tours are designed to maximize accessibility. Routes use step-free or gently graded paths wherever possible and avoid unnecessary barriers. Barring unexpected works, tours suitable for all.
Bridgeable
Bridgeable tours are generally accessible but include one or more features that may present challenges, to include moderate inclines, historic cobblestones, limited lifts, or a few isolated steps.
Constrained
Due to the nature or layout of sites visited on constrained tours, those in wheelchairs or with limited mobility and balance can unfortunately not be accommodated, as no practical alternative routes exist.
